How I Decided to Go There 🇬🇷
Completely by chance! Although I had wanted to visit Santorini for a long time, something unexpected always came up, and I couldn’t make the trip.
Until one beautiful day in late September, when my father and I decided to take a long weekend getaway to the pearl of the Aegean Sea.
As we were landing at the airport, the view from the airplane window already promised unforgettable moments and breathtaking scenery.
How to Get There ✈️
Traveling to Santorini can be an exciting and enjoyable adventure, so I’ll share some useful information on how to reach this magical island.
1. By Plane:
The easiest and fastest way to get to Santorini is by airplane. Here are a few options:
✅ Sofia – Athens – Santorini:
- From Sofia to Athens: Multiple airlines, including Aegean Airlines and Ryanair, offer direct flights. The flight takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- From Athens to Santorini: Upon arriving in Athens, you can take a direct flight to Santorini. The flight lasts around 45 minutes and is operated by various airlines such as Olympic Air and Sky
✅ Sofia – Thessaloniki – Santorini:
- From Sofia to Thessaloniki: You can reach Thessaloniki by car, bus, or train. The journey from Sofia to Thessaloniki takes approximately 4-5 hours.
- From Thessaloniki to Santorini: There are direct flights from Thessaloniki Airport to Santorini, with a flight duration of about 1 hour.
2. By Car and Ferry
If you prefer to travel by car, here’s how you can get to Santorini:
- From Sofia to Athens:
The drive from Sofia to Athens is approximately 800 km and takes around 8-9 hours, passing through Thessaloniki.
- From Athens to Santorini by Ferry:
Once you arrive in Athens, head to Piraeus Port, which is about 30 minutes from the city center.
From Piraeus, ferries to Santorini depart daily. The ferry journey takes approximately 5-8 hours, depending on the type of ferry—high-speed or standard.
3. By Bus and Ferry
Another Affordable Option: Bus and Ferry Combination
From Sofia to Athens by Bus
Several bus companies offer regular routes from Sofia to Athens. The journey by bus takes approximately 10-11 hours.
From Athens to Santorini by Ferry
Once you arrive in Athens, take a taxi or the metro to Piraeus Port, where you can board a ferry to Santorini.
Best Travel Option
In my opinion, the most convenient option is to find a direct charter flight to Santorini, usually offered by tour operators that also include hotel accommodations.
Once on the island, you can get around using public transport or rent a car, which is what my father and I did during our trip.
Where to Stay 🏡
Santorini is famous for its breathtaking views, romantic sunsets, and unique architecture. Choosing the right place to stay is essential for making the most of your time on this magical island.
Here are a few tips to help you find the perfect accommodation in Santorini:
- Fira: The capital of Santorini, offering a wide range of hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops. This town is perfect for those who want to be in the heart of the action.
- Oia: Famous for its stunning sunsets and luxury hotels, Oia is the ideal choice for romantic getaways and honeymoon trips, making it the perfect place to surprise your loved one.
- Imerovigli: Located between Fira and Oia, Imerovigli offers tranquility and breathtaking caldera views, making it an excellent choice for those seeking privacy and relaxation.
- Firostefani: Close to Fira but much quieter, this area is ideal for families and travelers who want to stay near the capital but away from the crowds.
Before choosing where to stay, it’s a good idea to set your budget. In Santorini, you’ll find everything from affordable hotels to ultra-luxurious accommodations, where a single night can cost several thousand euros!
We stayed at Hotel Rivari Santorini, located in Kamari, about a 10-minute walk from the beach. Initially, we had chosen another hotel, but while we were debating whether to book it or not, the rooms sold out.
In the end, it didn’t really matter, as we didn’t spend much time at the hotel anyway!
Where to Eat 🍲
Wherever You Like! Santorini is filled with amazing restaurants, and the food is absolutely incredible! From fresh seafood and fish to local delicacies, everything is fresh and delicious.
On our way to the beach from our hotel, we discovered a tavern called “Lolos”, where we ended up dining every evening—and we were more than satisfied! The prices were very reasonable, making it a great choice for a delicious and affordable meal.
Where to Enjoy the Beach 🌴🌞⛵️⛱
Santorini is also famous for its unique beaches, offering a variety of landscapes and atmospheres. Here are some must-visit beaches on the island:
1. Red Beach
Famous for its striking red cliffs and reddish sand, Red Beach is located near the ancient city of Akrotiri. This is one of the most popular beaches on the island and can get quite busy, especially during peak summer season.
2. White Beach
Accessible only by boat, White Beach features stunning white cliffs and black volcanic sand. It’s a peaceful and secluded spot, perfect for those looking for tranquility.
3. Black Beach (Perissa & Perivolos)
Perissa and Perivolos are two interconnected black sand beaches with crystal-clear waters. Among the longest beaches on Santorini, they offer a vibrant and lively atmosphere, with plenty of beach bars, restaurants, and water sports activities.
4. Kamari Beach
Another popular black sand beach, Kamari offers a long shoreline and plenty of nearby amenities. It’s a great choice for families and travelers looking for comfort and entertainment. From here, you can easily visit the ancient ruins of Thera.
5. Monolithos Beach
A calm and family-friendly beach with fine black sand. Monolithos is a quiet and safe option, ideal for families with young children.
6. Vlychada Beach
Known for its moon-like rock formations and dark volcanic sand, Vlychada offers a unique and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a great spot for those looking for a more unusual and less crowded experience.
7. Koloumbos Beach
A wild and untouched beach, perfect for nature lovers and nudists. Koloumbos is quiet and secluded, making it ideal for those seeking privacy and complete relaxation.
Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or stunning landscapes, Santorini’s beaches offer something for every traveler!
What to Visit 🎯
There is so much to see on the island, and trust me—you’ll never have enough time! At times, you’ll feel like you’re rushing around like the donkeys of Santorini, with everything happening at full speed.
And in all this hustle, I somehow missed visiting Fira—but hey, that just gives me a reason to come back!

Monastery of Profitis Ilias
The Monastery of Profitis Ilias, located on the eponymous peak, is one of Santorini’s most significant spiritual and historical sites.
Founded in 1711, it has played a crucial role in the religious and cultural life of the island. Situated at Santorini’s highest point, at approximately 567 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of the island and the Aegean Sea.
The monastery houses a small museum, showcasing religious artifacts, manuscripts, and rare books, offering insight into the rich history and cultural heritage of the monastery.
Profitis Ilias Peak provides some of the most stunning views of Santorini. From here, you can admire the entire island, the caldera, and the surrounding Aegean islands. This is an ideal spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.
The monastery is easily accessible by car. From Fira, the drive to Profitis Ilias takes about 20 minutes.
For those looking for a more adventurous experience, there is a hiking trail that starts from Pyrgos and leads all the way to the peak. The hike takes around 1-2 hours and offers spectacular views along the way.
Pyrgos
Pyrgos is one of the most charming and authentic villages on Santorini. Nestled in the heart of the island, it offers a unique blend of historical significance, traditional architecture, and breathtaking views.
Pyrgos was the capital of Santorini until the early 19th century. Today, the village retains its medieval charm, with narrow cobbled streets and a Venetian castle.
At the center of the village stands the impressive Kasteli Fortress, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the island.
Pyrgos is known for its white houses with blue-domed roofs and doors, a signature feature of Cycladic architecture.
I highly recommend wandering through the narrow streets, where every step reveals charming hidden corners and traditional tavernas.
Pyrgos is easily accessible by car or public transport from Fira. The distance is approximately 7 kilometers, and the journey takes around 15 minutes.
In the town and surrounding areas, there are various accommodation options, ranging from luxurious boutique hotels to cozy guesthouses.
Oia
Oia, also known as Ia (spelled Oia in Greek), is one of the most beautiful and popular destinations not only in Santorini but also in all of Greece. Located at the northwestern tip of the island, it is a symbol of romance and charm, attracting thousands of visitors every year.
Oia has preserved its authentic Cycladic architecture with white houses, blue-domed roofs, and narrow streets, similar to other villages here.
It is world-famous for its incredible sunsets. Every evening, hundreds of people gather to enjoy this natural spectacle from different viewpoints around the village.
Also, with its unique cave houses built into the rocks. Many of them have been converted into luxury hotels and villas.
Here, you’ll find numerous restaurants and tavernas where you can taste local delicacies and seafood while enjoying the sunset view.
The only downside of the town is that in the evenings, the narrow streets become horribly crowded with tourists. This happens after the sun sets, and everyone starts heading back. Believe me, we were stuck in one place for over 15 minutes, unable to move on any of the streets! It wasn’t particularly pleasant, but who really minds that, considering we had just witnessed one of the most beautiful and romantic sunsets?
The Volcano
The Santorini Volcano is one of the most remarkable natural attractions on the island, drawing thousands of tourists due to its rich history and impressive landscapes.
Known also as “Thera,” the volcano erupted around 1600 BC. This catastrophic event is one of the most powerful volcanic eruptions in human history and led to the formation of the caldera.
It is believed that the eruption contributed to the decline of the Minoan civilization on Crete, due to the massive tsunami waves and subsequent climatic changes. The eruption created a huge caldera, which is now filled with seawater and surrounded by steep cliffs.
The small volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni are located in the middle of the caldera and are the result of later eruptions. They are popular destinations for excursions and offer unique volcanic landscapes.
Near the island of Palea Kameni, there are hot springs where you can immerse yourself in the warm mineral waters, famous for their healing properties.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking along the volcanic paths, and don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and water, as the sun can be very strong! If possible, bring an umbrella—it gets really hot! And definitely bring water! I also recommend visiting this spot as part of an organized cruise.
The volcanic trails are safe to visit, but be sure to follow the guides’ instructions and stay cautious around the active fumaroles.
Santorini, Santorini… No matter what I say or write, it will pale in comparison to what my eyes and heart have captured in my mind, in the moment just before the sun sets and night settles on the horizon. I’m sure I’ll witness many more sunsets here, and soon, and the moment will be even more thrilling and… why not, even more romantic!
